PRODUCTION

I came to this project knowing nothing about the seemingly geeky world of remote-control car racing. I’m a sports fanatic and the remit of my company, Park the Bus, is to make sports related drama and documentaries. Motor sport however doesn’t rank highly in my list of favourites. When I heard how many people are enthused by and involved in this hidden sport though, I was intrigued to find out more, to meet the people involved. This, after all, is where Lewis Hamilton started at the age of six. As I would soon find out it’s a highly technical sport, as complicated as Formula 1. As such a number of those involved in it end up in the pits on F1 teams.

Together with photographer and videographer, Peter J Hayes, who came to me with the idea, we hooked up with Andy Hyde, of RC Vision, who is a major player in the world of RC Racing in the UK. He’d just set up the King Of Clubs - a series of race meets in the South Of England at five different tracks, which involved some of the best British racers around. We decided to follow a small group of them over the 2021 series, aiming to get under the skin of the sport to reveal what it’s all about, who takes part in it and why they do so. The sport provides the context, but this is the story of human beings whose number one passion in life, second only to their families, is building cars and racing them, for manufacturing teams, at unglamorous tracks in the middle of nowhere.
